Here Are The Most Iconic South African Sneaker Collabs

There are so many iconic sneaker collaborations that drop on a yearly basis and we feel it is important that we don't forget the artistry and craftsmanship that has been born right on our very own soil here in South Africa. Let's get into some of the most iconic collaborations that have happened to date and remember, if you find yourself wanting your own iconic pair - we've got you!

1. Shelf Life x Air Jordan Retro 2

Teaming up with South Africa's premier sneaker and streetwear retailer, Shelflife, this reinterpretation of the AJ2 immerses you in the philosophy of TEAM ONLY. Grounded in Shelflife's roots in graffiti and street art, the design exudes a blank canvas aesthetic with a pristine, neutral upper. Vibrant accents infuse energy, while the insole graphics—a collage of handwritten signatures and autographs—capture the essence of the company's mantra: "It's only through our team that we become who we are."

Shelflife embodies the ethos of TEAM ONLY, emphasizing that our true selves are discovered only through collaborative effort. Marking Jordan Brand's inaugural collaboration with an Africa-based company, this partnership is a testament to unity across continents and the quest for community.
Featuring premium materials and lively details, the insole showcases a medley of handwritten signatures and autographs that mirror the company's guiding principles.

2. Shelf Life x New Balance x Dr Zulu

Highlighting the rich cultural tapestry of South Africa for sneaker enthusiasts worldwide, the New Balance "City of Gold" 574 takes its design cues from Johannesburg, the country's largest metropolis renowned as the "City of Gold" due to its extensive gold trade and affluence. The graphics pay homage to the Parktown Prawn king cricket, a distinctive creature specific to the Johannesburg region that has become a cultural symbol for its aggressive nature and the urban legend of invincibility.

Incorporating two additional design elements, the sneaker adopts a yellow and grey color scheme reminiscent of the local train system, and features a stylized diamond symbol inspired by traditional African tribal artworks.

Crafted with meticulous attention to detail and premium materials, the "City of Gold" 574 combines mesh, nubuck, pigskin suede, and reflective 3M heel panels. Standout features include a yellow speckled sole, lace locks adorned with prawn graphics, yellow lace tips, and distinctive branding on the heel.

The comprehensive "City of Gold" 574 package offers a collection of premium extras, including two interchangeable velcro options for the 'N' logo, an extra pair of black laces, and a rubber prawn keychain.

3. Nike Air Force 1 Black History Month

Black History Month, observed annually in February in the United States, is a tribute to the accomplishments of black Americans. Since 2005, Nike has marked this significant month by unveiling distinctive Black History Month (BHM) products, with the iconic Air Force 1 taking the lead.

In honor of the worldwide black history movement and to celebrate the 35th anniversary of the iconic Air Force 1, Nike crafted a special collection of customized BHM Air Force 1s six years ago. South Africa, situated at the core of the African diaspora, leads this initiative, honoring individuals identified as the future force—the chosen pioneers.

The silhouette showcases a graphic marbleized print of South Africa's national flag on the inner and outer sides of the all-black nubuck upper, resting atop a pristine white sole. A gold hang-tag featuring the African continent motif with BHM boldly displayed, along with a lace lock incorporating the tri-colors red, black, and green inspired by the Pan-African flag, complete the sneaker. The sock liner bears the powerful message of 'equality.' This exclusive edition, produced over six years ago, is a rare gem, with fewer than 40 pairs in existence, making it a unique and collectible piece.

4. Reebok x AKA Supa Mega

Released in 2019, #TheSneAKA represents a Reebok Classic Leather model, distinguished by the embossed "Supa" and "Mega" on the back heels. The color palette includes a vibrant mix of Red, Yellow, Grey, and White. The interior of the shoe features a striking Yellow hue, complemented by insoles adorned with a Black pattern. This exclusive release is a highly limited edition, with only 600 pairs in production. Each box was meticulously numbered and personally signed by AKA, accompanied by a certificate of authenticity.

This distinctive creation is more than just a pair of shoes; it now stands as a testament to AKA's lasting impact on South African hip-hop culture. It ensures that AKA's influence will endure for generations to come, becoming an integral part of the cultural legacy in the realm of South African hip-hop.

5. Asics Springbok Gel Lyte 3

In celebration of the Springboks' triumph in winning the 2019 Rugby World Cup in Japan, ASICS released a Limited Edition 'ASICS Springbok GEL-LYTE III,' showcasing the iconic green-and-gold color scheme of the Bokke jersey.

The shoes featured the distinctive green-and-gold colorway of the Springbok jersey, accentuated by detailed embroidery accents. Originally introduced in 1987, this classic sneaker's latest iteration provided wearers with a commemorative design coupled with unparalleled comfort and enduring bounce.

The midsole incorporated foam and GEL™ technologies, a combination previously featured in ASICS performance footwear tailored for running and fitness. This addition delivered cushioning and rebound, ensuring all-day comfort and a lightweight ride—a hallmark of ASICS' exceptional cushioning system.

Retaining the beautiful and iconic design elements of the original GEL-LYTE™ model, the commemorative sneakers featured the traditional tongue and collar, along with a conventional lacing system, aligning with the prevailing trend for nostalgic sneaker styles.

6. adidas Consortium x Shelf Life ZX 4000

Embracing the core concept of a robust foundation and rich heritage, adidas intricately crafted the Shelflife ZX4000, drawing inspiration from local elements such as textiles, diversity, fabrics, and materials. Layer by layer, they built this sneaker to not only reflect their identity but also to encapsulate a profound strength, narrating their story to resonate both locally and globally.

Taking on the illustrious legacy of the adidas ZX running shoe series, they applied their unique perspective to reimagine the ZX4000 model. When viewed head-on, the Shelflife version showcases a restrained use of opulent greyscale nubuck and woven fabric underlays, paying homage to the historical craftsmanship of South Africa. However, in action and on foot, the medial side unveils a vibrant, jacquard-printed panel, adding a burst of color and energy.
