RICH MNISI: A Multi-Faceted Trailblazer

Established in 2015 by Rich Mnisi in Johannesburg, South Africa, RICH MNISI is a contemporary, multi-disciplinary brand that originated as a creative outlet for Mnisi's exploration of Africa's hidden treasures through a modern lens. The brand was conceived from Mnisi's desire to establish a profound connection with his Tsonga culture, weaving a captivating narrative through his artistic expression.

Mnisi graduated from the Lisof Fashion Design School in Johannesburg, South Africa and has received acclaim for his work in the fashion industry. His designs have been featured in various fashion shows and publications and he has collaborated with several brands and entities to showcase his designs and expand his reach. To date, Mnisi has collaborated with the likes of BMW, H&M, Adidas, Coco-Cola and fellow luxury designers in South Africa like Thebe Magugu.

In May 2023, RICH MNISI and Adidas unveiled their latest collaboration, a distinctive collection and campaign named "Pride 2023: Let Love Be Your Legacy." With a shared commitment to promoting allyship and unrestricted expression in all realms of sport and culture, the adidas x RICH MNISI collection encompassed both lifestyle and performance, featuring signature silhouettes spanning adidas Originals, football, cycling, Sportswear, and swim. Inspired by a heartfelt letter Mnisi composed to his younger self, the collection embodies the ethos of "Let Love Be Your Legacy." This sentiment serves as both Mnisi's personal mission statement and a call for active allyship to empower and champion the LGBTQIA+ community.

In July 2023, The Johannesburg-based designer collaborated with the Swedish company, H&M to launch a street-style collection featuring relaxed and oversized fits in n a move to broaden accessibility to his highly sought after brand. Mnisi explained, "Our decision to collaborate with H&M was driven by the desire to make our designs accessible to a wider audience, including those who have been vocal supporters of me, my team, and the work we do with this brand."

RICH MNISI has even branched out into furniture, his first solo exhibition of collectible furniture, titled Nyoka, debuted in October 2021 and ran until 4 February 2022. The collection – comprising seating, a console, chandelier, rug and other objects – is a bold exploration of shape and fluidity, brought vividly to life in a rich array of materials including bronze, wool, resin and glass. Nyoka draws on Mnisi’s family history and African mythology, and plays with the duality of fear and beauty epitomised by the image of a snake, which gives the show its title in Xitsonga.

Every offering from RICH MNISI provides a unique perspective on duality, showcasing the designer's distinct viewpoint and celebrating cultural heritage and shared human experiences. The brand serves as the artistic realization of an audacious vision, drawing inspiration not only from the realm of fashion but also from film, music, art, and nature.
